Ashwagandha is a traditional herb of Ayurvedic Medicine (Ayurveda) with tonic and adaptive properties. It has significant anti-inflammatory and antioxidant capacity against free radicals and strong antimicrobial activity against potentially dangerous bacteria, especially salmonella, an organism associated with food poisoning.

Based on clinical trials, Ashwagandha can act soothingly against the unpleasant effects of stress in the presence of elevated cortisol levels. Participants in one particular study experienced a reduction in cortisol of up to 26%, a reduction in blood sugar levels, and an improvement in lipid profile. They also reported increased energy, reduced fatigue, better sleep and an enhanced sense of vitality.

Warning: Ashwagandha extract has a reinforcing effect on the normal immune response of the body, potentially increasing the symptoms of autoimmune diseases. Its use is not indicated for people suffering from multiple sclerosis, lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, stomach ulcer and/or gastrointestinal diseases. It is recommended to discontinue use of the herb if gastrointestinal distress occurs. Ashwagandha exhibits interactions with sedative, immunosuppressive and antithyroid drugs. It is recommended to stop using it at least 2 weeks before any scheduled surgery.
