The discs, although they seem like a simple product, are actually quite a bit more complex. Their production process, in order to get a very good result, is difficult and complex, while the quality varies significantly from disc to disc. We will try to analyze the process and what the consumer should pay attention to before making the purchase.
One of the first things that makes a difference in the disc is the thickness. The reason is that cast iron is a mixture of iron and carbon. The thicker the disc, the less iron the mixture has, so the cheaper the product, but also the worse the quality.
On good discs the weight can vary by +/- 5%. In case it is above disc quality, and factory process quality is not good.
The finishing process is as follows. At first, after it comes out of the mold the disk is ground and smoothed (not as meticulously as in plain enamel). If the factory is good, then they put it in a rubber mold, and the layer is enough to give protection. In cheaper products, the rubberizing process is done simply by dipping the disc into hot rubber. But this does not give the necessary rubber thickness and therefore the necessary protection. Of course this will lead to a lower price but also a lower product. One way to check this is to "stick" your nail in so you can feel one go in or feel like it's touching the iron directly. Finally, the rubber compound plays an important role. In the very cheap products the virgin rubber mixture is below 30% resulting in less protection, but also a bad smell. AMILA discs have a 50% virgin rubber compound.
Finally the plastic on the ring, it must be of good quality so it doesn't break.
